The overall awards for ACBL team games are twice as large as the overall awards for pair events.
This is just a bug in the formula. It should be easy to fix. Right?
The formula for calculating masterpoints should keep masterpoints per person approximately the same no matter how many players are competing. The ACBL formulas do not come close. For example, a club game with 13 1/2 tables awards 72% more masterpoints per person than a club game with 5 tables.
The ACBL's formulas should be replaced with a good formula.
The ACBL's Board of Directors tries to do what is right, and the ACBL members get what they want. So why do we have gross discrepancies between merit and award in our masterpoint system?
We need more knowledge/awareness about masterpoints. Masterpoints are awards (not a measure of ability). Good management of awards includes making the award proportional to merit.
